Island Community Solar was founded by six Whidbey residents with decades of experience and a contagious enthusiasm for solar energy and renewal energy production. In 2010 they formed an LLC for the explicit purpose of promoting such a local, grass roots renewable energy plan.

ICS has qualified for a rural energy grant from the federal government (REAP), Washington State renewable energy production incentives and a clean energy grant from Puget Sound Energy. They have formed partnerships with the Coupeville Port District and The Green Bank Farm to make their dream a reality.

At present Island Community Solar operates with a seven member board representing 23 investors that have contributed a minimum of $10,000 each toward the installation of a solar enterprise located on the Greenbank Farm on central Whidbey Island. Construction, managed by Whidbey Sun and Wind, on this 25 kilo watt solar installation began in February of 2011 and Start-up is on target for mid June of 2011. Some pictures of the work in progress can be found here.
