Common Red Paintbrush

Common Red Paintbrush (Castilleja minieta)
Figwort Family

Found: Moist open areas and slopes, low to high elevations, Pacific Northwest.

About: Flowers are narrow and greenish. They are mostly concealed by the colorful red bracts.

The Latin name miniata refers to an obscure word for the scarlet-red color: minium. I hope you can use this in a scrabble game sometime.

Most paintbrushes are at least partially parasitic to the roots of other plants.
