Project for the New American
Century
PNAC, the
"Project for the New American Century", is a Washington based
think-tank founded in 1997 by Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Richard
Perle, and William Kristol. Their Statement of Principles makes for an interesting read. It is short and
sweet, and makes crystal clear the direction they intend to take our
country in the future. Here is an exerpt; (scroll
down to bottom ...)
"Such a Reaganite policy of military
strength and moral clarity may not be fashionable today. But it is
necessary if the United States is to build on the successes of this
past century and to ensure our security and our greatness in the next."
After the 2000 election of George W. Bush, many of
PNAC's members were appointed to key
positions within the new President's
administration, including Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Wolfowitz.
(scroll down to "Bush Administration").
In September of 2000, PNAC issued a 90 page report
called "Rebuilding America's Defenses" which called on the U.S.
military to “fight and decisively win multiple, simultaneous
major theater wars”. It also states that "a
substantial American force presence in the Gulf transcends the issue of
the regime of Saddam Hussein”. But most compelling
was the following statement;
"Further, the process of transformation,
even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one,
absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event - like a new Pearl
Harbor."
(PNAC's website is here, and you can view
the "Rebuilding America's Defenses"
report here.
The "new Pearl Harbor" statement can be found
on page 51 of the report ...)
"We are on the verge of a global
transformation. All we need is the right major crisis and the nations
will accept the New World Order."
(Sept. 23, 1994)
"Moreover, as America
becomes an increasingly multicultural society, it may find it more
difficult to fashion a consensus on foreign policy issues, except in
the circumstances of a truly massive and widely perceived direct
external threat." (p. 211 of his book "The Grand
Chessboard",1997)
So, have we gotten our "major crisis" ... our
"truly massive and widely perceived direct external threat" ... our
"catastrophic and catalyzing event" ... our "new Pearl Harbor" ??
