Shock and Awe with National Geographic

It appears that the new shock and awe is a doomsday mentality, revolving around conservation issues like peak oil and global warming, at least if you believe the mass media. The current example is presently airing on National Geographic, a series called "Aftermath", which appears to have several parts ... http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/series/aftermath/4462/Overview ...  http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/episode/aftermath-population-zero-3225 ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNjHQUXbPu8.   What imagery!  Pure hollywood, isn't it?!  And this coming from an iconic media entity claiming to be "Inspiring people to care about the planet since 1888" !!   You might want to let the kids skip this one, especially since evidence for impending doom is anything but forthcoming.   Oh there's evidence for global warming.  I know.  And of course conservation is always a good thing.  But the question is, why this shock and awe media spin?

In the past we have looked at cronies like Al Gore and Maurice Strong who are cashing in on "crisis".  But National Geographic?  Who would have thought?  As it happens, this all makes perfect sense, really, when you consider who has partnered up with National Geographic (and many years ago, I might add) - it's an old friend from team Bushcraft, Ruppert Murdoch.  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/georgianne-nienaber/fox-owned-inational-geogr_b_112699.html  ...  http://www.allbusiness.com/media-telecommunications/telecommunications/6645689-1.html.   Yes, it would seem that Ruppert is now concerned with conservation.  Amazing that this round of shock and awe is so mysteriously different from, in fact diametrically opposed to, the previous, Fox News style one.  Hmmm ...

It is, however, very similar to the paranoia swirling around swine flu vaccination, which posits, "Get one, just in case!"  "Take desperate measures - just in case!"  Stick a live, attenuated virus (and whatever else might be in there...) into my body, amidst today's political/industrial complex, just in case?  No thanks.

So it's the same old mantra here:   Danger, danger, danger, so that the cronies - who couldn't compete on a level field to save their lives - can laugh all the way to the bank.  Ruppert Murdoch and National Geographic.  So sweet, even with the all too familiar message;  end times are nigh!
