The International Green Movement
The Green movement is truly global! Green parties have spread to more than 75 countries on five continents. Greens are partners in the ruling government coalition in Germany and are coalition partners in several other European governments.
Greens In The USA
The Green movement in the United States boasts two national organizations (the Association of State Green Parties and Green Party USA) and statewide organizations in 43 states and the District of Columbia. There are more than 70 Greens holding elected office in 17 states.
Greens In Washington State
The Green movement in the U.S. has been building since 1984, and Greens have been active in Washington for much of that time. The Green Party of Seattle grew out of the 1996 Ralph Nader/Winona LaDuke campaign, which helped reinvigorate the Green movement nationwide.
The Green Party of Washington State officially formed in May 2000 at the leading edge of a wave of party growth in the state spurred by the 2000 Nader/LaDuke campaign. The Greens leave the 2000 election with at least one lead organizer in each of Washington's 39 counties and more than a dozen strong county organizations across the state.
Green Issues
Greens in Washington State are currently active in a variety of issues at the local, state, and national level. Washington's Greens are:
Demanding labeling of genetically modified food;
Opposing the expansion of urban sprawl and working to address the effects of existing sprawl;
Promoting a more affordable and equitable health care system;
Supporting the development and funding of alternative modes of transportation.
In the past, Greens have mobilized to oppose the WTO, promote affordable housing, support the continuation of affirmative action programs, oppose advertising in public schools, and protect the Cedar River watershed.
