Rectangular Prism/Cylinder Volume and Surface Area Worksheet Generator
submitted by: Jeff LeMieux, August 2004This narrative describes how I use my javascript tool, cataloged in the Math Tools digital library, in the classroom.
Course: Math 7
Topic: Geometry, volume and surface area
Resource type: JavaScriptResource location:

http://mathforum.org/mathtools/tool/12888Story: This worksheet uses generic graphics to represent the prisms and cylinders. The problems are generated at random on each run or reload. The answers include the volume and the surface area. Degree of accuracy is left to the assigning instructor. The purpose of the program is to supplement the usually meagre supply of exercises in this area. There is no particular reason to assign all three answers to each problem. Be sure to discuss units when presenting this page.
Where and how I used this: I use this script to generate problems for practice and review, especially for the set-up and execution of the problem. The answers are included so students can compare their results, but oftentimes the exercise is to see if the student can interpret the problem and design a solution. I feel it is important that students use proper notation in their answers so they are encouraged to use the generic term units if none are given.
