This narrative describes how I use my Perl script tool, cataloged in the Math Tools digital library, in the classroom.

Course: Math 7
Topic: Fractions
Resource type: Perl Script

Story:   While there area limited number of fractions in the "real world" that people deal with on a daily basis, the operations and procedures of fraction math are the basis for much of the math manipulation in algebra. These worksheets are not meant to be instructional but rather provide problems and answers which can be used for instruction and practice.

The script allows you to select operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and a random selection), and styles (proper fractions or mixed numbers). In addition, level of difficulty is determined by selecting either denominators up to 12 or denominators originally specified by the Washington State Standards for Grade 7 (includes 15, 16 and 20). A maximum of 30 problems may be selected. When this program was written it was difficult to find worksheet generators or software programs that provided a suitable visual format.

Where and how I used this: This is one of my most used scripts. It is used to practice lessons and is also used for individual diagnostic work. The format and graphic presentation allows printing of overheads from the web page - or use use of a projector.
