Equivalent Fraction Worksheet
submitted by: Jeff LeMieux, August 2004This narrative describes how I use my javascript tool, cataloged in the Math Tools digital library, in the classroom.
Course: Math 7

http://mathforum.org/mathtools/tool/12856Story: One focus of teaching fractions is the relationship of fraction manipulations to the operations used in algebra. The idea of equivalent fractions is based on the identity property. Students need to start thinking in broader terms than specific algorithms. This worksheet draws attention to two items. Number one is that equivalent fractions are made by multiplying (or dividing) the numerator and the denominator by the same term. Number two is the idea that these two terms, written as a fraction, equal the number 1.
While this seems to be obvious, I am constantly reminded with middle schoolers, that ALL variants of presenting an idea are useful to some of the students. Many have not made this connection yet.
Where and how I used this: This worksheet (and/or projection)are used faily early in the review and discussion of fractions. Typically, the terms numerator and denominator are discussed first with accompanying diagrams and manipulatives. After using manipulatives and diagrams to discuss equivalent fractions, and after the identity property is introduced and modelled, this sheet is used as a followup. Having it available for some one-on-one work for students who were absent and/or need additional practice is a useful feature.
