BIOGRAPHY OF QUENTIN GATES

The president of NARFE’s Northwest Cascades Chapter #196 for 2008 is Quentin “Q” Gates of Bellingham. Q became a member of the Overland Park, Kansas chapter shortly after retiring from federal service in 1998 and transferred his membership to the Whatcom County Chapter when he and his wife, Judith, moved here in 2000. Q became the chapter’s vice president for Whatcom County when the Skagit, Island and Whatcom chapters were combined.
Q is a native of Altoona, Pennsylvania and after serving four years in the U.S. Air Force in the late 50’s, accepted a position with the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller in 1962. He earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Colorado and a fellowship in Public Administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology while serving as a controller in California and Colorado.
Among other hobbies, Q is an avid barbershop harmony singer and uses his administrative training and experience to teach organizational skills to barbershop harmony organizations around the United States and Canada.
Q’s goal for our chapter is to improve communications with all members of the Northwest Cascades Chapter by expanding face-to-face, written, telephone and internet contacts with all members.

BIOGRAPHY OF HOWARD BUNDY

Howard Bundy VP Skagit County

Howard graduated with a BS in Physics from Washington State University in 1963 and became involved with Westinghouse Electric Corporation in training nuclear power plant operators for the Navy. Later work included operating the plutonium production reactors at the Hanford works and constructing and operating commercial power plants in Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Washington. In 1983 Howard joined the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)as a Resident Inspector with assignments in Indiana and Kansas. In 1985 he transferred to the NRC Region IV office in Arlington, Texas and performed safety inspections on most of the commercial power plants in the western half of the country. During the last 8 years of his career Howard was a senior examiner for nuclear power plant operator applicants. A few months after his retirement in 2003 he moved to Anacortes with his wife Irene and joined NARFE in August 2004. Howard’s hobbies include fishing and bird hunting. Howard believes that the most challenging problem for Chapter 196 is communications. Improved communications should result in greater member participation in chapter activities.
