Resource Management
What can you do when you see a display like this one on your screen after you boot up and before you run any programs? This site will help you better manage your system resources so that your computer has enough oomph left to give you the performance that you paid for and that you have a right to expect. The section What Loads At Startup will explain how you can determine which of the terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) programs start to run as soon as you boot up, whether you are running Windows 95 or Windows 98. The section What To Uncheck At Startup contains recommendations for which of the most common programs you will see among the startup group you can safely eliminate, which you may eliminate if you don't need the features that they provide, and which you MUST NOT eliminate. The final section, Memory Use By Windows, is for more advanced readers who would like an excellent discussion of how Windows uses memory and why you can't just load up your machine with a gigabyte of RAM and run everything you have installed at once. Several very nice people who have signed my guestbook have asked how they can access Delltalk. It is not restricted to Dell users, although it was designed for them. Questions posted there are answered mostly by Dell users, although Dell Moderators will occasionally answer a question (they monitor the forum mostly to ensure accuracy of answers and decorum). Even if you don't have a question, you will probably find it an excellent source of information if you only browse the questions and answers posted there. You can reach Delltalk HERE.
